Identity: The Journey to Finding Ourselves

By: Brianna Alexander-Thomas

In a world as diverse as ours, the concept of identity is far from simple or easy, as human beings we are very complex in many ways. Each of us carries within us multiple social categorizations that shape our experiences, perspectives, and interactions with the world. These identities do not exist on their own, they intersect and intertwine in complex ways, influencing how we navigate through life.

What makes up my identity?

Almost anything can be considered your identity such as lifestyle, passions, family, hobbies, and language. Our identities are shaped through many factors such as our character traits, willingness to grow, mature, evolve, become better, our family background, ideological perspective and personal experiences.

Struggling to find yourself is something many people have been through and as you get older, you will see yourself change in many different ways. You may not like all the same things as before or you might be a completely different person than you thought you might be by now.

What can I do to strengthen my sense of self?

  • Get to know yourself better - The best way to find out who you are or who you want to be is to think about the things that you like or are important to you. For example, if you like sports; try investing some time in sports and build your talents in sports.

  • Exploring your heritage - Learning about your ancestors or cultural background can help bring a sense of pride. Try asking your parents about your family tree, doing research on your cultural background, reading books or watching documentaries or movies filmed or based in the place you're from.

  • Learn to trust yourself - As you’re finding yourself remember to stay true to who you are. Don’t do things you think are cool or things to impress other people. Do what you think is right and stay true to you!

  • Find a role model - Role models can play an important role in finding yourself because not only will they help guide you through the process but they can also offer invaluable advice when you need it. When looking for a role model, look for someone you look up to that has good morals, demonstrates confidence and leadership, effectively communicates with those around them, and is kind, helpful, respectful, and willing to admit their mistakes.

  • Explore new things - Don’t be afraid to try new things! One of the easiest ways to figure out what you like is noticing what you don’t like. Spend some time exploring and trying new things; even if you don’t like it at least you tried!

  • Take your time - When it comes to self discovery it takes time; don’t focus on the outcome. Instead focus on the journey and enjoy the process as it happens; try not to get so caught up in being able to define who you are. Just be you because that’s all you can be.

Exploring your identity and who you are is a journey that everyone goes on; some people find out new things about themselves even in old age! As you get older and explore new things your world will expand and you’ll even see yourself change and develop over time. Figuring out who you are can be a life long journey so be sure to enjoy it and be the you that you will be proud of.
